Thorburn Winter-Warmer Project 2016

At Thorburn we take our social responsibility very seriously and are fortunate to have such dedicated employees who all work behind the scenes to ensure that our initiatives are meaningful and high impact.  We recognise that we have an impact on the communities surrounding the areas in which we provide our services and it is part of our DNA to constantly strive towards the upliftment of these local communities.  We do so through Enterprise Development (ED) and community support, with projects ranging from assisting local SMME suppliers, supporting nominated charities with food, and the annual Thorburn Winter-Warmer blanket drive.

The Thorburn “Ice Breaker” initiative is an internal winter support program to our security personnel, whereby we issue thermal underwear, warm gloves, beanies and thermal mugs to our valued employees out there in the field.  These types of projects, and many others, have been undertaken since 2009 when the first of our blankets were donated to orphans in Driekop being cared for by the People Against the Spread of HIV Aids and Starvation, and have now become a Thorburn staple.

As a responsible, ethical organisation that cares, we believe we have an active role to play in improving the lives of the needy, ill, old and frail.  This year is no different, as Thorburn donated 500 blankets to very destitute and grateful communities in Kathu, Secunda, Sasolburg, Rustenburg, Steelpoort and Phalaborwa.  Even our staff were extremely humbled when participating in the hand over of these blankets.  Through our interaction with the communities is areas of extreme poverty such as Phalaborwa and Trichardt, Thorburn decided to take on Trichardt Farm School and the Livhuwani Orphan Project as permanent recipients of monthly support programs through food donations.  The blanket recipients were:

#Bana Ba Monare Wa Seboladi Old age home (Steelpoort)

#Dingleton Networking Project (Kathu)

#Tirelong School (Rustenburg)

#Koffikraal Old Age Haven (Zeerust)

#BOAS (NPC) Counselling Centre (Sasolburg)

#Livhuwani Mashimale Community Orphan Project (Phalaborwa)

#Trichardt Farm School (Secunda)
