Specialist Crowd Facilitation Training

Volatile labour, and more specifically community members in rural and mining areas, has forced security service providers to expand their service offering as well as the approach to risk of civil disturbance.

A group of 30 Thorburn Security Officers were trained in Crowd Facilitation techniques at the ECM Winterveld Club sports grounds by external trainers last week.  This brings to 40 the number of trained Crowd Facilitation Officers in the Steelpoort Area alone.  Not only did this training include intensive physical training, but it was also conducted in the extreme heat conditions brought about by the recent heatwave.  The Thorburn philosophy is to train personnel in various crowd handling techniques as a first line of defence until the SAP arrives on the scene.  This approach is backed by pepper gas guns, pepper gas grenades and as a last resort, shot guns with rubber pellets (not an advisable option) in emergencies.  Many a company fails to train their Crowd Facilitation Officers to also operate without a shotgun and armoured vehicle, whereas we believe that the handling of crowds must be with done with minimum force and that the “hard core” approach should be left to the SAP.

Thorburn Security Solutions is in the process of acquiring armoured personnel carrier vehicles which will bolster our crowd facilitation basket of products and capabilities.  In the interim, an armoured SUV and mobile command unit is available as tactical support.

Officers who underwent training in 2015. In 2012 a group of 20 Officers underwent similar training in Steelpoort, of which 10 received refresher training this week.
