Creating Enterprise Development Opportunities

04.11.2013

The Mhalangu Day Care Centre in Mamelodi near Pretoria provides day care, shelter and food to children and is dependent on parent donations, the church, business and community support. A few orphans are also cared for at the centre. The facilities are primitive and require upgrades, such as chemicals to flush toilets, etc. – projects that local churches will support.

In order to start up a small business that could generate future funds, Thorburn Security Solutions donated 10 new generation stoves (the future replacement of the traditional unsafe  paraffin stoves), each with a month’s liquid fuel supply. The idea is that the stoves are sold and that the Mhalangu Day Care Centre becomes the fuel supplier, as this particular fuel is not sold at traditional outlets, thereby creating the opportunity of a franchise for the Mhlangu Day Care Centre.

Danie Crowther, the CEO of the distribution company Proto Energy gave a full demonstration of the stoves and highlighted the benefits thereof.  Our main focus is to replace the use of wick-based paraffin stoves and wood/charcoal fires in South Africa with the ProtoStar Clean Cook Stove and ProtoStar Clean Cook Fuel. Our products improve the living conditions of low income households through a safer, cleaner, healthier and cheaper way of cooking.”

Interesting statistics as a motivator for the new generation stoves that were donated by Thorburn:

– paraffin is used in more than half of all South African homes;
– 700 million liters of paraffin is used in SA each year, most of which for cooking;
– 80 000 children ingest paraffin every year;
– unsafe paraffin use costs the country some R104 billion per year
– more than 200 000 people are injured annually or lose their property due to paraffin related fires;
 -main causes of fires in low income households:stove exploded (38%)
– stove knocked over (23%)
– stove left unattended (2%)
– 63% of all shack fires are attributed directly to paraffin stoves
